How to make an iPad/tablet Cover and Stand

Whether you’re working from home or going for a picnic, this handy iPad stand/cover is a great way to keep your device clean and protected from scratches as well as going hands-free when needed.

The fabric featured in this project -

Finished size:

Standing – 10.5 x 7 “

Open – 22.5 x 10.5 “

What you’ll need:

2 strips of lining fabric measuring 11” x 2”

1x lining fabric measuring 11” x 12.5”

1x lining fabric measuring 11” x 7.5”

1x outer fabric measuring 11” x 7.5”

1x outer fabric measuring 11” X 15.5”

24” of 0.25” Piping cord

24” x 1.75” Fabric for piping

24” x 24” Wadding

20” of 0.25” wide elastic

3 pieces of approx. 10” x 7” thick card (trim to size before inserting)

Use ¼” seam allowance

**check these fabric measurements against your device before cutting. Make adjustments if needed. My iPad measures approx. 7” x 9.5”

How to make:

1. Cut the piping cord and piping fabric in half. Place the piping cord along a strip of fabric (on the wrong side) and fold the fabric around. Sew long sides together, close to the cord. Repeat with other piping cord. Trim the seam allowances to ¼”.

2. Sew one of the piping pieces to the right side top edge of a 2” strip of lining fabric.

3. Sew the second 2” strip of lining fabric right sides together to the piping cord.

4. Sew the second piping cord right sides together to the opposite edge of the lining strip.

5. Sew the bottom edge of the largest lining piece of fabric right side of the piping. Open and press.

Adhere wadding to the wrong side of this panel.

6. Adhere wadding to the remaining lining piece and the 2 outer pieces of fabric.

7. Sew a piece of elastic across each corner of the smaller outer fabric piece, 3” from each corner.

TIP - try putting your device in the elastic to make sure they are in the right position and tight enough to hold the tablet before constructing the rest of the stand.

8. Sew this smaller outer piece right sides together to the top half of the larger outer piece of fabric.

9. Fold the top of the piped section over by ¼” and top stitch. Place this piece right sides together over the bottom of the outer section and sew around the bottom three sides.

10. Fold the bottom of the remaining lining piece over by ¼” and top stitch. Sew right sides together to the top of the outer side, leaving a gap in between the top and bottom lining pieces.

11. Snip across the corners and turn right side out.

Slip 1 piece of card into the bottom so that it sits behind the piped panel. Trim the card if necessary. Sew a line 1” from the top of the card to keep in place. Slip the next piece of card to sit on top of the sewn line.

12. Push the final piece of card inside to opposite end, hand-sew the gap closed.

This is how the inside of the cover will look -

And this is the outside -

Slip your tablet into the elastic and fold the case around to close!
